The Seed of the Sacred Fig

Family bonds unravel and generations clash in this extraordinary drama from acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Mahommad Rasoulof. Interwoven with real life mobile and social media footage, The Seed of the Sacred Fig offers immersive insight into a wider social reckoning, told through the story of one family being torn apart.

When civil servant Iman is promoted to investigating judge in the Iranian revolutionary court, his new responsibilities include extracting confessions and signing death penalties. His family are expected to fully embody the moral values of the political regime. But when civil and political unrest starts to escalate in Tehran following the death in custody of Masha Amini, Iman's own daughters begin to question their expected place in society especially as the daughters of a judge and Iman's mistrust and tyranny over his family grows.

Shot in secret and resulting in the persecution of director Mahommad Rasoulof, who was eventually forced to flee Iran, The Seed of the Sacred Fig is a major artistic and political accomplishment and even more so for being produced in such astonishing circumstances. This searing drama captures the growing unrest among a generation deprived of rights. Much like its maker, The Seed of the Sacred Fig is a courageous testament of resistance against tyranny.
