Eighteen-year-old Totone spends most of his time drinking, flirting and partying with his friends. Reality catches up with him when he suddenly becomes responsible for his younger sister and the fate of his father's farm. Together with his friends Totone mischievously hatches a plan to compete in a lucrative cheese-making competition.
Louise Courvoisier's directorial debut is a refreshing, affable and unexpectedly tender portrait of contemporary rural European life. It deservedly won the youth prize when it premiered at Cannes Un Certain Regard 2024. A local to the idyllic Jura region in the heart of Comté country where the film is shot, Courvoisier proves her credentials as one of the next generation of European social realist cinema-makers, who prize the nuances and extraordinariness of ordinary lives. Holy Cow is further set apart by the charismatic performances of its young, non-professional cast, who bring their own appealing authenticity.
